To support the vineyard, we built three ponds. With that much water, you need fish, so we stocked Koi. With fish and water, you need ducks. To protect the ducks from coyotes, you need brush, so we built a bamboo jungle maze. Jungles have burds, so we built an aviary. Just because they are smart and interesting, we got goats. To watch and supervise it all, we built an observation deck. Since we had the water distribution system and weren't busy anyway, we put in several acres of Christmas trees. Our unique winemaking process requires two climate-controlled cellars, so we built them for our very special nouveau-style wine made from whole-cluster fermentation. All this and a lovely tasting room and gift shop.

Nestled in the countryside of the historic Washington-on-the-Brazos, where the founding fathers signed the Texas Declaration of Independence, you will enjoy the hospitality of the German and Spanish heritage of August and Linda Meitzen. The full blossom quality wines they produce follow family honored traditions of success: a loving wine master, hard work, a good deal of prayer, faith, and the help of expert mentors. Visitors are struck with olf fashioned neighborly welcome as August and Linda share the fulfillment of their dream. Enjoy their tasting room as you learn about quality wine making and take pleasure in their gift shop, displaying the talents of local artists.

Retreat Hill Winery & Vineyard is located in the rolling hills of southern Grimes County, Texas, about 60 miles N.W. of downtown Houston. Our name was inspired by Groce’s Retreat, which was located about 2.5 miles from our location. The Texas Declaration of Independence was authored at Groce’s Retreat and later ratified at Washington-On-The-Brazos. Between March 18 and March 21, 1836, Groce’s Retreat served as the capital of the Republic of Texas. At Retreat Hill Winery & Vineyard, you can enjoy any of our fine wines while sitting on the back porch overlooking the vineyard, shop for specialty gifts and gourmet foods, including farm fresh goat cheese, sample new wines right out of the barrel or purchase our wines to take home. We offer intimate Vintner’s dinners in the winery for 6-8 people and our 12-acre estate is available for private parties of 20 or more. Our mission at Retreat Hill Winery & Vineyard is to create elegant wines in a relaxed country setting in the same spirit of the pioneers who founded Texas. We invite you to relax under the boundless blue skies, revel in the breathtaking terrain and rediscover the beauty that is Texas in the other hill country.

Cork This! Winery is a boutique winery specializing in custom made wines created from the highest quality varietals. Not only do we make our own wines for sale by the bottle, we specialize in customized labels for corporate gifts, weddings or special events. You can taste our wines or create your own batch of wine. It’s our goal to break down the traditional wine speak barriers and create an atmosphere where folks can relax, enjoy wine, and most importantly have fun! Wine making is perfect for a group of friends, an evening out, or a team-building function. Participants making their own wine come back approximately eight weeks later to bottle, cork, seal, and label it themselves.  Cork This! Winery offers a relaxing place for you to enjoy wine inside or outside on our extensive patio. We also provide a great place for leadership team building retreats, a private celebration or just an escape from the daily grind.

Visitors Welcome: Wed - Sat, 11am - 6pm;  Sun 1pm - 5pm (during wine trail) and for other Sundays we may or may not close... we tell people that the schedule varies, so call ahead!
